Sun-soaked and unapologetically vibrant, Heatwave hums with saturated pinks, coral reds, marine blues and citrus tones — a radiant coastal palette set against the quiet drama of Collecté’s white-walled gallery. The contrast is deliberate. The energy is magnetic.

Mitchell English’s paintings do not simply depict the coastline; they distil it. Heat shimmers. Figures blur. Horizons dissolve into atmosphere. Gesture and memory collide in bold, expressive strokes that feel at once nostalgic and immediate. The ocean is present — but so too is the emotional temperature of summer.

Displayed amongst eccentric collector pieces — black and white striped sofas, Le Primitif Antiquités dark teak forms, and a monumental white totem sculpture — the works become part of a layered narrative: art as object, object as art.

Sydney-born and now Noosa-based, English brings more than three decades of practice to this exhibition. A lifelong surfer with a refined art historical eye, his work has been recognised in major Australian art prizes including the Mosman Art Prize, the Gold Coast Art Prize and the Shirley Hannan Portrait Award, and is held in significant public and private collections — including Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum.
