April Psonis is a self-taught contemporary artist based in Melbourne, where she paints from her home studio in Prahran, sharing life with her husband and young daughter.

Born and raised in Tasmania, Psonis developed a deep love of painting and drawing from an early age. She attributes her creativity to a family legacy, inspired particularly by her talented grandmother, whose artistic influence helped shape her own creative path.

Working primarily with acrylic and oil pastel, Psonis creates bold, expressive paintings that explore the relationship between softness and strength, masculinity and femininity. Her works command attention through their striking colour, confident composition and emotional depth.

The female form sits at the heart of her practice. Rather than depicting women as passive subjects, Psonis portrays them as conquerors, visionaries and rule breakers—figures who transcend convention and reject the limitations imposed by societal expectations of what beauty should be. Her subjects embody resilience, autonomy and unwavering self-possession.

Through dynamic colour palettes and powerful compositions, Psonis explores the interplay  between stillness and power, celebrating the richness and complexity of the female experience.
