Artist Statement – Anita West

Anita West is an Australian landscape and seascape artist whose work was acquired by Parliament House for its permanent collection via Gallery One in 2019.

Of her practice, Anita shares:

“Glimpsing an ancient landscape through the eucalypts, breathing in the quiet. Feeling the Australian bush opening pages of my memory. Looking through the windows of my soul, finding rainforests.”

Her work explores the emotional and romantic notions attached to the Australian bush — its earthiness, subtle hues, chaotic rhythms, bushfires and drought-breaking rains. Working between abstraction and realism, emotion and perception, Anita records and interprets preserved natural habitats, National Parks and World Heritage areas, as well as local bushland under threat of development.

Her practice is deeply place-based, drawing on both memory and observation, as she continues to seek new landscapes and influences as the backdrop for her work.
